How did one comic change Batman forever? Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns turned an aging Bruce Wayne into the dark, brutal legend we know today.

In this video, we break down how The Dark Knight Returns reinvented Batman in 1986, inspired Batman Year One, Batman vs Superman, and every gritty take on the Dark Knight since — from comics to movies to animation. If you love DC Comics, graphic novels, and comic book history, this is the story of how Miller saved Batman from camp and made him a myth again.

We cover Miller’s older, angrier Bruce Wayne, the fight with Superman, Carrie Kelley as Robin, the media satire, and why Dark Knight Returns still defines Bruce Wayne almost 40 years later.
